Northern New Mexico lies at the end of three historic trade routes that connected its population to distant lands to the south, east, and west. Where New Mexico did not have supplies of mined or farmed resources or to offer, it was able to support a lot of sheep whose wool was made into blankets offered in trade.

This class will visit that textile history tying Abiquiu to the outside world through 400 years of history. We will try our hand at spinning Churro wool by the warmth of a Ghost Ranch fireplace, and weaving the striped Rio Grande blankets that left Abiquiu over the trails. We’ll look at the changing cultural influences over time as they altered the product of the looms. We will visit collections of old textiles, and the historic locations related to those trade and train routes on field trips. We will also try our hand at the tapestry techniques that transformed the Rio Grande tradition through the 19th and 20th centuries, learning about the ideas and the business markets that guided blanket design and production.

Lisa Trujillo, an award-winning weaver from Chimayo, NM, is known for her work in the Rio Grande weaving tradition, her spinning and dyeing, and for her stunningly unique designs. She and her husband, Irvin Trujillo, a National Heritage Fellow and Spanish Market Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, own Centinela Traditional Arts weaving co-op. Lisa Trujillo learned to weave after marrying Irvin in 1982. She has spent the years since then immersing herself in learning traditional design systems as well as finding new ways to use traditional techniques and materials. She has become adept at spinning churro wool quickly into a yarn ideally suited for her richly-textured tapestries and blankets. Her occasional weaving workshops have helped her develop teaching materials that she hopes to eventually make available beyond just her workshop students.
